Bikers throwing plastics on B’guet–Vizcaya Road hit

Environment, 4-13-2014

Hundreds of empty plastic bottles abandoned by week-end bikers practically littered a long stretch of the 65-kilometer Benguet-Nueva Vizcaya highway posing danger to other road users, stakeholders revealed last week.

The stakeholders, composed of concerned municipal officials and community elders, reached out to this paper last week to complain about “the abuse of the highway by motorcycle riders and by hordes of bikers almost at will and without regard for the environment.”

They said the most recent incident occurred on April 5 when participants to a mountain biking activity compromising of more than 200 bikers took off from Sitio Adonot towards Baguio City on April 5.

They said the bikers abandoned behind them hundreds of empty bottles littered practically on both sides of the highway or on the highway itself, without regard for other road users.

They added the participants included those from giant corporations, including a team fielded by a Benguet-based power corporation.

They said the spilled bottles can prove risky to motorcycles especially during night time.

The stakeholders said the bikers did not provide for a team to pick-up the litter, leaving the task to concerned residents.

The highway has also proved to be a favorite alternate route for motorcycle riders on the way to Baguio City from the lowlands or vice-versa.

Like the bikers, they are also described as a major source of empty plastic bottles indiscriminately thrown along the highway.

In partnership with local government units, the province of Benguet has created an inter-local health zone to ensure that the highway is free of litter and both sides of the highway are planted with flowering plants as was done along the Halsema.

The piles of empty bottles abandoned by bikers and motorcycle riders is seen as an eyesore in an ongoing inter-local government cooperative effort to enhance the stability and attraction of the highway.

The highway is considered the shortest link to the Cagayan Valley from Baguio City and is the main road system leading towards the tourist town of Kabayan.
