Death due to clashes between Army, rebel forces in MP hit

Mountain Province, 4-13-2014

BONTOC, Mountain Province – The fighting between government forces and the rebels resulting to death of cops and soldiers from the Cordillera, especially Mountain Province, has been strongly condemned in the province.

Mountain Province Board Member Florence Taguiba received a thunderous applause from people gathered at the Eyeb gym here after she delivered an emotional remark on senseless deaths due to government and rebel encounters.

Taguiba said it is disheartening that proud sons of Mountain Province who were either serving with the military or police are killed during an ambush or firefight days before the annual celebration of the Mountain Province Foundation Day held every April 7.

She said the celebration of the provincial foundation day and the Lang-ay Festival come at a time when some families are in deep mourning for the loss of their loved ones.

The New Peoples’ Army has been celebrating its founding anniversary every March 29. In most instances, tactical offensives were launched against government forces during or prior to their founding anniversary.

On March 29, PO1 Jefferson Sari of the Regional Public Safety Battalion and PO1 Marcelo Kilasen of the Mountain Province Police Provincial Safety Company were killed in an ambush by NPA rebels in Barangay Dalican.

Two more policemen named as PO1 Romeo Fakat Jr. and PO1 Benido Magan were wounded.

On April 2, pursuing government forces killed a suspected rebel leader identified as Daniel Alunday alias Tikid, the team leader of Squad 2, West Chico Line of the NPA.

One of the recent bloodiest ambuscades to happen in Mountain Province was in July 2010 when seven soldiers, including an officer, were killed in an ambush at Barangay Talubin.

On April 6 of the same year, the military and rebels had an encounter in Dalican or four days after one rebel was killed during an earlier encounter in Sagada on April 2.

On April 5, 2013, NPA rebels killed three policemen and wounded three more in Asipulo, Ifugao.

On April 26, 2012, 10 soldiers, including an officer and two civilians, were killed during an ambush staged by the rebels in Tinoc, Ifugao.

On April 12, 2011, seven soldiers were allegedly killed and two choppers were damaged during a six-day intense fighting between the military and NPA rebels in Tubo, Abra, according to reports quoting Abra rebel spokesman Diego Wadagan.
