Eddiva vs Brazilian foe in UFC Fight Night 42

Sports, 4-13-2014

Fast rising Filipino mixed martial arts fighter Mark Eddiva is again entering the Ultimate Fighting Championship octagon on May 31 in Brazil to fight against a Brazilian juijitsu opponent.

UFC has confirmed the fight between Eddiva and Edimilson Souza in the featherweight division. The match will take place during UFC Fight Night 42 at the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Although undefeated in six fights, the 28-year-old Eddiva from Sadanga, Mountain Province will enter the cage as an underdog considering that Souza, 29, is a more veteran fighter in terms of number of fights.

Both fighters are coming off from a win, each by way of unanimous decision.

The 5’8’’ Eddiva has beaten previous undefeated Chinese fighter Jumabieke Tuerxun during UFC Fight Night 37 at The Venetian Macao’s Cotia Arena in Macau on March 1 while the much taller Souza won against Felipe Arantes in UFC Fight Night 28 on Sept. 4, 2013.

Souza was never defeated in his last eight fights and most of his wins came by way of knockout and technical knockout.

Eddiva’s wins came by way of TKO and rear naked choke and it was his first time to win via a decision. He is the first full-blooded Filipino and first Igorot to fight and win in UFC debut.

The University of the Cordilleras BS in Education senior student majoring in English has 11 medals from international wushu competitions, including two gold medals in Southeast Asian Games.

UFC Fight Night 42 will be headlined by current TUF: Brazil 3 coaches Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen.
