Sports, 4-13-2014

Igorot boxing promoter Brico Santig was conferred the WBC Asian Boxing Council Promoter of the Year during ceremonies held in Bangkok, Thailand on April 9.

Santig, manager of La Trinidad-based Highland Boxing Gym, has been credited for guiding Filipino boxers to become Asian and world champions over the past years.

The latest Filipino boxer to become world champion under the watch of Santig is Rey Loreto who captured the IBO Junior Flyweight World championship title.

The southpaw Loreto knocked out former world champion Nkosinathi Joyi in third round of the 12-round undercard of the WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennary Golovkin against Osumanu Adama in Monaco in February.

Other boxing champions under Highland Boxing are Donnie Mabao, WBC Asia Continental minimum weight champion, WBC ABCO minimum weight champ Mateo Handig, WBO oriental bantamweight champion Dayer Gabutan, and WBC International super flyweight champ Rey Megrino.

Three more champions in the person of Alvin Tam for WBC Continental Lightweight; Nelson Gulpe for WBC Continental Lightweight and Jujeath Nagaowa for WBC Asia Atomweight also trained with the Highland Boxing.

Philboxing.com, the online source of boxing news, described Santig’s stable as one of the most spirited, disciplined, and lively boxing gyms in the country today.

Also awarded in Thailand was Pariyakorn Ratanasuban of One Song Chai Muay Thai Boxing Promotions.

Ratanasuban was conferred the WBC Asian Lady Promoter of the Year.

Muay Thai fighting girl Rika Matsumoto of Japan received the recognition as the Best WBC Female Muay Thai Champion.
