Benguet urges healthy lifestyle through weight loss challenge
by Ofelia C. Empian

The Benguet Provincial Capitol is looking to crown its “biggest loser” after 40 days, with the winner not only going home with a cash prize and bragging rights, but also a few pounds lighter and healthier.

Patterned after the American TV show, The Biggest Loser, the competition aims to look for the employee who lost the most weight after almost a month.

But unlike the TV show, the competition will not have an in-house fitness coach barking orders to the employees while doing squats and burpees, but will allow them to lose weight on  their own.

“We encourage them to lose weight the natural way,” Dean Mark Monang, the province’s sports development officer said.

Monang said the idea came from Abner Diclas of the governor’s office, who said the competition could help employees watch their diet and lose weight, especially during special occasions and community gatherings where food is overflowing.

He said the competition is also an avenue to encourage employees to live a healthy lifestyle and be fit.

He said the annual medical checkup of the 1,300 employees of the provincial government yielded mostly unfavorable results, such as fatty liver, high cholesterol, and high trigly-ceride.

Weekly games are conducted after 5 p.m. as part of the local government’s fitness program.

Monang said there are exercise equipment at the capitol fbut only a few would join the games and use the equipment.

That is why they have pegged a registration of P200 to get those who are truly interested to join. The first edition of Capitol’s biggest loser has attracted 40 female and 16 male participants.

Beginning Nov. 5, the participants which include female categories weighing below 65 kilograms and 65kg and above; and male categories including below 80kg and 80kg and above, noted down their initial weight.

Monang said the big reveal would be the final weigh-in from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 18 at the Capitol lobby.
