LT asks DA Sec for new plant materials for strawberries
by Ofelia C. Empian

Due to the declining performance of older planting materials of strawberry in La Trinidad, Benguet, the municipality has requested Agriculture Sec. William Dar for new generation of planting materials.

The municipal council has approved the resolution filed by Councilor Arthur Shontogan that requests the agriculture secretary to allocate P5 million for the procurement of new generation of strawberry planting materials.

“The existing strawberry planting materials were already at the 4th to 6th generation and the production is already very low,” Shontogan said.

He said the planned replacement of planting materials will benefit the 2,000 farmers planting strawberries in various parts of the municipality.

The preferred varieties to be procured are Sweet Charlie, Festival, and San Andres, which are suited for the town’s soil fertility and have been grown by local producers.

“Recent typhoons and continuous rains caused floods and swamped portions of Strawberry Fields of the municipality damaging farms growing strawberries,” he said.

The municipality remains the major source of strawberries distributed in the local markets around the country.

The harvest season for strawberries is from December to March.

Due to its moniker as the “Strawberry Capital”, the produce remains the top-drawing industry in the municipality.

Based on the town’s data, 79.49 hectares of farms were planted with strawberries in 2018 with an average annual harvest of 1,775 metric tons or 22.5 tons per hectare.

La Trinidad holds the Guinness World Record of baking the largest strawberry shortcake in the world on March 20, 2004.

The cake weighed 21,213.40 lbs (9,622.23 kilograms) and was baked by various bakers in the municipality.

The resolution was forwarded to Dar’s office for his action.
