Public market vendors moved
by Star Inacay and Peal Dacuag

City administrator Peter Fianza said that 140 fruit and vegetable vendors will be relocated to fully rehabilitate the vegetable and sari-sari store buildings of the Baguio City public market.

Seventy fruit vendors will be moved in front of the Maharlika Livelihood Center, while the vegetable vendors will occupy the sidewalk in front of the rice section to the Old Tiong San part of the city market along Magsaysay Avenue, but will not cover any part of the road.

Fianza said that only 40 percent of the sidewalk along Magsaysay will be used by the fruit vendors so people could still pass along the area and vehicles will still have a two-way passage, since each tent that the vendors will utilize is only two-by-three meters wide.

He said that they have communicated with the Maharlika building administration and they had responded favorably towards their request while they still need to ask permission from the Department of Public Works and Highways to use a strip of the road. He also asked authority from the city council for the temporary use of the street along Magsaysay Avenue particularly in front of the rice section of the city market and the use of railings along the vegetable and sari-sari section.

The rehabilitation will start as soon as the tents are set and will last for 40 days, before the Centennial celebration on Sept. 1.

However, the installation of the tents was set last July 21 to 22 but most of the vendors went ahead. Fianza said that according to the vendors, they were told that the set up will be on a first come first serve basis so they already set their tents before the given time.

“They did not follow the order of the movement but if we can coordinate (with them) and stay in line with the program of movement, then we can address that concern,” he said.
