Firm supports efforts to curtail pesticide misuse
by Press Release

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Syngenta Philippines assured the Benguet provincial government that it is committed to support its intervention with the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) in resolving the problem on the misuse of one of their products in the highland province’s vegetable farm communities last Friday.

Country head of Syngenta Crop Protection Toshiaki Shinohara said he has also written to FPA executive director, Dr. Norlito Gicana, expressing their concern over the misuse of Gramoxone, the company’s branded formulation containing Paraquat.

Syngenta said they hope that the government would immediately resolve the issue since Gramoxone has shown to be a highly efficient and safe agricultural tool when used for its intended purpose, just like any other widely-used herbicide or other commonly available household chemicals.

The company also expressed serious concern that the decision will deprive thousands of Cordillera farmers of the substantial benefits Gramoxone brings for integrated weed management and sustainable agriculture.

Paraquat has been widely used for many years in more than 90 other countries, including the Philippines, United States, Australia, Canada, Brazil, China, and India.

In a letter to Gov. Nestor Fongwan, Shinohara said Syngenta is committed to “work with the regional government to address the issue of pesticide misuse and to support the ‘best in vegetable production’ province in the Philippines as well as farmers who are benefiting from our products with proper use.”

“With the guidance of the FPA, Syngenta is ready to act immediately,” he said.

“Rural suicide is a tragic and complex problem, and Syngenta does not believe that removing just one product from many which may unfortunately be misused will have any effect on the root causes of the problem,” the company also said. Many professionals believe it is far more effective to focus on improving the understanding of how best to prevent suicide, like psychological counseling, intensified peer group support and tackling depression and anxiety at home and the community.
