Tabuk to pilot regional economic dev’t program
by Larry Lopez / PIA

TABUK, Kalinga – Local chief executives in the province are solidly supporting the move of piloting the Local Regional Economic Development (LRED) program  in this town.

Department of Trade and Industry regional director Myrna Pablo resounded the support from Kalinga Rep. Manuel Agyao and Gov. Floydelia Diasen during the opening program of the LRED training of facilitators last week.

Tabuk City mayor Camilo Lammawin also assured full support and committed his town’s counterpart to the program.

Pablo cleared that the basic criteria for a place to become LRED pilot area is the commitment of its local chief executive to provide counterpart in the implementation of the program.

LRED is local planning based on critical issues coming from stakeholders through minimum basic needs survey aimed at providing opportunities for employment and additional income for the poor.

The program was first piloted in Leyte province for region 8 and has effectively uplifted the economic standing of poor families in the area. Through LRED, investment in Leyte expanded based on actual pulses of residents, which are considered crucial in any development process.

Underlining the LRED formula that has been proven in developed cities in Europe, Pablo urged participants to spread the LRED to every LGU in the Cordillera and to the entire North Luzon.

She said that the significant tool derived from the program on capacitating government and non-government institutions become more responsive to the needs of constituents.

When the two start working together as partners, economic transformation in the countryside takes place towards the national aim on economic prosperity, Pablo said.
