City’s modern satellite market eyed for construction next year
by Gaby B. Keith / PIO

The city government is targeting to establish the Summer Capital’s first modernized satellite market in the Gibraltar-Pacdal district area by next year in line with the executive-legislative collective core agenda on market modernization.

This was revealed by Councilor Philian Weygan-Allan, chair of the committee on market, trade, commerce and agriculture, in Monday’s flag-raising rites at City Hall before local officials, employees, and guests headed by Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Rep. Mark Go, and Vice-Mayor Faustino Olowan.

She said the much-anticipated facility will include underground parking, sections for wet and dry goods including souvenir and apparel, offices and services areas, with the top floor envisioned to be a food court.

Weygan-Allan said that the satellite market is supported by the concerned district’s barangay captains through an earlier signed manifesto expressing their support for the project.
“That is commitment,” she said.

In 2006, a satellite market resolution was passed that resulted in the establishment of talipapas (wet markets) in several barangays of the city.

Allan said officials of the Irisan and Dontogan barangay cluster are taking initial steps by identifying the area for their own district’s modernized satellite market.

She also encouraged City Hall workers to visit the night market at Harrison Road that she said is “more orderly with attractive tents, improved food section with a washing area, and portalets.”

Allan said the marked improvement was due to several general assemblies and consultations conducted by her committee with the 1,067 night market vendors that led to agreements for a more orderly enterprise. The city’s night market has become a popular destination for tourists and residents.

Recently, the city council approved on first reading a proposed ordinance by Councilor Elaine Sembrano providing for the preparation and implementation of a Baguio City District Satellite market Development and Upgrading Plan.
