The Baguio City Police Office is establishing the identities of the suspects in a robbery of a department store over the weekend.
BCPO Director Jesus Cambay Jr. said composite personnel of the Special Weapons and Tactics and Station 7 arrested one of the suspects.
Cambay said the suspects entered the old Tiong San Bazaar along Magsaysay Road by drilling a tunnel leading to the first floor of the establishment.
The suspects first passed through the city’s main drainage canal before drilling a 10-meter tunnel leading to the establishment.
An alert security guard immediately called for police assistance after hearing noises coming from the underground.
Responding policemen nabbed Danny Macario, a resident of Tuba, Benguet.
Police also seized original Levis 501 jeans and jackets and the equipment used by the suspects.
Cambay said it is not the first time that Tiong San Bazaar was victimized by robbers who dug a hole from the underground.
“We would like to commend the management of Tiong San for immediately reporting the incident to the police resulting in the arrest of one of the suspects. This means we are gaining the trust of the public,” the BCPO director said.
Cambay, meanwhile, told reporters follow-up investigation are being done to determine if the suspect and his cohorts are members of the dreaded Acetylene Gang.
The Acetylene Gang has been operating in most parts of Luzon and in the metropolis of Visayas.
