Mayor orders scrutiny on new arrivals, calls for Muslim’s help
by Hanna C. Lacsamana

Baguio Mayor Mauricio Domogan has obtained the commitment of the Muslim community in the city in helping prevent the entry of individuals involved with the Islamic State terror group that is now sowing unrest in a city Mindanao.

Domogan said it is the obligation of Muslims here to report to the authorities new arrivals to the city, especially those coming from Mindanao, whom they are not familiar with or those who have suspicious backgrounds.

He said he received reports that a group of Muslims were seen on board a jeep in La Union and were apparently headed to Baguio City.

“We want to know who these people are in order to monitor them, not to discriminate or accuse them of anything, to be sure that they are not planning to cause harm in this city. We appeal to the citizens to do the same before any trouble happens,” Domogan said Wednesday.

He also warned some members of the Muslim community who resent or claim discrimination when they are arrested for violations of the city’s ordinances.

“We have proven to you that we do not single out Muslims from the others.Alisin sana ng iba sa inyo ang pag-iisip na kung mahuli kayo ay dahil sa kayo ay Muslim. ‘Yan ay dahil may nalabag na batas, na siya nating ipinapatupad, Muslim, Igorot, o sino pa man. Kung ganon ang mentality ninyo, umalis kayo sa Baguio. You go somewhere you will not be disturbed,” Domogan said.

“I warn you na kung sakaling me-rong mangyaring pagbomba o kaguluhan sa City of Baguio, kahit na hindi kayo ang gumawa sigurado na ang nasa isip ng tao ay kayo dahil sa nangyayari sa Marawi. That is why we want your full cooperation,” he added.

The mayor added that he directed the Baguio City Police Office to augment the deployment of police force in frequently populated areas and establishments like bus stations, shopping malls, night market, and tourist destinations such as parks, Camp John Hay, and Baguio Country Club.

The police was also told to coordinate with security agencies manning these establishments and places to assure that their guards are well prepared and equipped in preventing potential terror acts in the city.
