Insurance for calamity volunteers sought
by Gaby B. Keith / PIO

The issue of providing accident insurance to volunteers who help during times of disasters or calamities will be presented to Mayor Benjamin Magalong during the third quarterly meeting of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) which he is expected to chair in September.

CDRRM Office staff Glenn Lardizabal disclosed this during the second CDRRMC quarterly meeting chaired by CDRRMO head Yolanda Munar and attended by representatives from various local and national government offices and agencies, volunteer groups, and non-government organizations.

Lardizabal said trained volunteers are much needed especially during major calamities due to the lack of CDRRMO personnel, as well as equipment.

He suggested that the least the city government can do is provide volunteers accident insurance should anything untoward happen to them when assisting residents or visitors during disasters or calamities.

Lardizabal said he has taken an accident insurance for himself, paid out of his own pocket just like several of his colleagues at the CDRRMO.

Also discussed during the meeting are the city’s preparatory measures for typhoon season and monsoon rains; updates on the status of disaster risk reduction and management projects; and preparations for National Disaster Resilience Month.

He said the CDRRMO regularly conducts seminars on incident command systems, disaster awareness, and similar trainings for various groups including the conduct of earthquake drills with other concerned agencies.
