Another cadet dies at PMA, found at the bottom of the pool
by Rimaliza A. Opiña

Just as the Philippine Military Academy is trying to regain the public’s confidence in the institution, the academy has confirmed Friday that another cadet fourth class died inside its premises.

PMA claimed that Cadet 4th Class Mario Telan, Jr. drowned at the academy’s pool facility.

Initial information revealed that Telan of the Alpha Company attended his swimming class from 11 a.m. to noon. Since then, he was unaccounted in his next class.

His body was found by his classmates at past 2 p.m. of Nov. 8 in the 15-foot deep end of the pool.

The academy statement said efforts were done to revive the cadet who was also immediately transferred to the Fort del Pilar Station Hospital, where he was declared dead by the attending physician.

The PMA said it is now investigating the incident. In the meantime, swimming lessons have been suspended until the institution is able to conclude the probe.

“In coordination with PNP Baguio, a thorough investigation is now being conducted to determine the events that transpired leading to this incident.  All needed actions and protocols are being undertaken to deal with any infraction and/or irregularity,” PMA said in a statement.

In a statement, the PMA said it will extend all assistance to Telan’s family.

“PMA deeply grieves for this unfortunate loss of one of our sons. All necessary assistance will be extended to the bereaved family and loved ones of Cadet Telan,” PMA said in a statement.

Telan Jr. is the third cadet to die at the PMA this year.

The first was Cadet 4th Class Darwin Dormitorio, who is said to have died from hazing-related injuries, and Cadet 2nd Class Cedrick Gadia who died due to cancer.
