by Julie G. Fianza / PIO

The city Bantay Asin Task Force was reorganized to implement the Asin Law.

The Asin Law or Republic Act 8172 and its local version, Ordinance 77, s. 2002, mandate the use of iodized salt in food establishments and public and private hospitals and households.

Executive Order 151, s. 2020 provides that the Bantay Asin Task Force, formerly known as the Baguio Salt Iodization Monitoring Team (BSIMT), is composed of the city health officer, the sanitary engineer, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay, and representatives from the Permits and Licensing Office, Public Information Office, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Baguio City Police Office, Department of Trade and Industry, and the health and city nutrition committee.

The task force shall monitor compliance of salt traders or distributors and public and private establishments to the provisions of the Asin law, DILG issuances, and related ordinances; help promote the consumption of iodized salt; and support salt iodization projects to ensure availability of iodized salt for use and trading.

The task force also encourages and ensures the existence of barangay-based salt iodization monitoring teams under the citywide team.

Health and sanitary officers and nutritionists shall strictly monitor the quality of iodized salt used by the public.

Mechanisms are also provided for iodized salt to be readily available to consumers.

A periodic report, details of activities, and recommendations of the task force shall be submitted to Mayor Benjamin Magalong.
