A city councilor is asking for the city government’s support to the National Disability and Prevention Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week celebration in the 3rd week of July.
President Gloria Arroyo through Presidential Proclamation 361, s. 2002 declared the third week of July as the NDPR Week which culminates on July 23 each year in a bid to empower persons with disabilities in the entire country.
As such, councilor Erdolfo Balajadia, chair of the city council committee on health, said that there is a need for the city government to support the event to bring a message that even PWDs have a critical role in the development of the city.
He said that support can be extended through the facilitating with local religious groups/churches for the reading of pastoral letters relative to the celebration and conduct of seminars, symposia, and other similar activities on disability-related laws for local government officials and employees.
The inclusion of PWD-related information in the flag raising ceremonies and broadcasting in local media and display of streamers at City Hall and other offices of the city government will also be a big help to the PWDs.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government has been designated by the National Council on Disability Affairs Board to host this year’s NDPR celebration.
This year’s theme: “Kapag may access, may success” emphasizes the importance of providing accessibility to PWDs not only through facilities but also through services and employment opportunities as provided for by Republic Act 7277.
RA 7277, otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons, directs the national and local government to implement programs and services that will ensure the full participation of PWDs in all aspects of community life. |
