The reported rice shortage being experienced in the entire country prompted one higher learning institution in Baguio to grant rice subsidy to all its employees and retirees recently.
The rice grant of around 900 sacks of first-class rice to the employees and retirees of the University of Baguio is a form of “humanitarian” action to reciprocate their good performance even in times of crisis.
The college teaching staff were handed the highest rice subsidy at 496 sacks, 152 for the non-teaching staff, 122 for retirees, 38 for the administration staff, 30 for the maintenance staff, 24 for the UBHS teaching staff – 24, 18 for the UB Science High teaching staff, and 18 for the elementary teaching staff.
“The rice assistance is very timely and helpful, especially now that our salary is budgeted tightly. Somehow, we can stretch the budget and buy other important things for the children,” said one of the beneficiaries.
The grant of rice subsidy was made possible through UB’s board of director headed by its chairperson, Leonides Bautista.
UB reported that the rice subsidy is an early “reward” to the employees, who are also receiving a yearly December rice benefits. Full time employees received one sack or 50 kilos each while all the part-time employees and retirees got half sack or 25 kilos each.
The rice subsidy for UB workers came just as the national government vowed that it is doing its best to address the reported rice shortage, as it encouraged the private sector to be part in efforts to solve the crisis.
The NFA reported that the rice consumption requirement for Baguio and Benguet on a monthly basis is 166,000 bags. |
