Apayao towns’ solid waste plans for approval at NSWB
by Gerriahzon S. Sebastian

LUNA, Apayao – The 10-year Municipal Ecological Solid Waste Management Plans (ESWMP) of all the municipalities of Apayao were recommended for approval to the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC).

Commissioner Romeo Hidalgo of the NSWMC told Gov. Elias Bulut, Jr. that all the towns of Apayao substantially complied with the provisions of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, hence, the recommendation for approval of their ESWMPs.

Hidalgo made the pronouncement in behalf of the NSWMC Technical Working Group (TWG). The ESWMPs of all the municipalities of Apayao were presented and deliberated upon on March 22 in Calanasan, Apayao.

Bulut thanked the mayors for exerting effort and allocating funds for the preparation and implementation of their ESWMPs. He also thanked the members of the NSWMC TWG for reaching out to the people of Apayao.

Pudtol Mayor Hector Pascua expressed gratitude to the TWG for the affirmation of the ESWMPs of the municipalities. “We will make sure that we will implement the contents of said plans in our respective municipalities not only for approval’s sake but as a way of life,” Pascua said.

According to the TWG, the ESWMPs will be endorsed for approval after revisions are made in line with the recommendations of the TWG during the March 22 deliberation.

The panel that deliberated on the ESWMPs went to Sta. Marcela and Flora to visit the schools that have best practices on waste management.

Flora Central School under the leadership of Resty Leano has garnered several awards for the Search for the Most Sustainable and Eco-friendly Schools.

The Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera earlier said they will be filing cases against local government units that failed to comply with the provisions of RA 9003. Section 50 of RA 9003 provides that officials of government offices that fail to comply with the law shall be charged administratively in accordance with the Local Government Code and other laws and regulations.
