Kalinga to plant 3 million seedlings
by PIA Kalinga

TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) through its partner people’s organizations is preparing at least three million tree seedlings for this year’s enhanced National Greening Program.

Acting PENR Officer Noel Barientos said planting will start as soon as the rains come in June.

The extended enhanced NGP in the province includes fruit trees and bamboos in its 2,700-hectare target planting area.

Mangroves and bamboo are among the commodities of the Commodity Roadmap of the Enhanced NGP, a convergence initiative reforestation program the second phase of which commenced this year  up to 2028.

The PENRO is also eyeing about 400 hectares in the province for titling under the free patent. Barientos said they have included free patent titling as a priority program to help address problems on land distribution in the city.

He said 200 hectares are classified as agricultural while another 200 hectares are residential. Also included in the lands for titling are government lots which are intended as sites for schools and offices.

The PENRO is calling on involved parties to cooperate to hasten resolution of issues for the earlier issuance of titles.
