Country Club eyes ASEAN Green Hotel hall of fame

Premier city hotel Baguio Country Club is gunning to secure the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard award for the third time this year and become the first hall of famer awardee of the prestigious mark in the Philippines.

The ASEAN Green Hotel is an ASEAN initiative dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism practices around the ASEAN through the adoption of the environmentally-friendly and energy conservation and compiling, adapting, and creating the tools and training to engage in ASEAN Green Hotel practices.

So far, 20 hotels and properties in the country have received the award since its inception in 2008. Last year, 10 homegrown hotels were among the awardees, among them the Baguio Country Club and The Manor at Camp John Hay, both having won for the second time.

Andrew Pinero, BCC Corporate Communications and Customer Service manager, said the hotel and its premises have just been inspected last week by representatives of the ASEAN Tourism and the country’s Department of Tourism for this year’s judging.

He said the hotel has been doubling efforts in order to achieve such fame.

Pinero, who shared the club’s environment and solid waste management practices in the Thursday edition of the Talakayan sa Environment Code, said the Baguio Country Club board of directors and management have always considered a sound environment program a priority.

Among its practices is an aggressive recycling program so that the facility’s wastes would not be an added burden for the city government in garbage collection, as it also has its own garbage hauler.

In the club, wastes generated are collected and from which those that can be reused and recycled are segregated. Some of these materials have become the life and mainstays of the club’s annual Christmas Village, which has become a tourist drawer after it was introduced six years ago.

The BCC also has its own composting program, where it produces its own organic fertilizers from wastes such as kitchen refuse that are used in the upkeep of its gardens. The club maintains an organic vegetable garden, an organic strawberry farm, a greenhouse, a theme park, and an infinity garden.

Pinero said BCC constantly coordinates with concerned government agencies such as the Environment Management Bureau for advice and for more ideas to improve their environment practices and solid waste management program.
