Kalinga, MP lead good governance awardess
by Harley F. Palangchao

Two provinces and 21 municipalities in the Cordillera were conferred the coveted Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) by the Department of the Interior and Local Government, a proof of improved delivery of government services in these areas.

Mountain Province and Kalinga led the local government unit awardees from the Cordillera that joined other awardees nationwide during recognition rites in Manila last week.

The three LGUs in Mountain Province led by Bontoc and Bauko then Paracelis also received the SGLG award.

No town in Kalinga made it to the list of SGLG awardees for this year, though.

The towns of Bucay, Dolores, La Paz, San Juan, Tubo and Peñarrubia in Abra and the LGUs of Buguias, Itogon, La Trinidad, and Tublay also received the award.

The LGUs of Conner, Kabugao, Luna, Pudtol, and Sta. Marcela in Apayao and the towns of Asipulo, Banaue, and Lamut were likewise conferred the award that were all rated on local government performance management system – overall performance index, seal of good housekeeping for local government, innovation, and awards or distinctions.

Cordillerans, who have settled in nearby provinces like La Union, also posted on social media how Igorot lady mayor, Precy Martin, has elevated the status of Pugo since she assumed the mayoralty post in 2016. Pugo is also an awardee this year.

This year, around 448 LGUs were conferred the DILG seal, which is also an indication that more and more LGUs are exerting efforts to further improve services to people in the communities, according to DILG Officer-in-Charge Catalino Cuy.

Cordillera ranked fifth among regions with the most number of LGUs that received the seal this year. Calabarzon topped the list with 35 followed by Northern Mindanao with 29 then Cagayan Valley with 28 and Eastern Visayas with 26.

Launched several years ago, the award sets criteria aimed at recognizing LGUs with good to excellent financial administration, disaster preparedness, social protection, and also peace and order – the newest addition to the criteria.

The city government and the provincial government of Benguet are among the pioneering LGUs awarded with the DILG seal.
