Three personnel of the Philippine Air Force Tactical Operations Group 1 gave a gift of comfort to two young cancer patients at the Baguio General Hospital Center by responding to their calls for blood donors.

“It has been a tradition in our office that we respond to calls for blood donors especially when the ones seeking for help are terminally-ill patients,” said the most senior PAF personnel in the group, who requested not to be named.

The PAF officer did not hesitate to convince his fellow soldiers at PAF-TOG1 headquarters to prepare for blood extraction. Since it’s a holiday break, only Airman 2nd Class Christopher Balacillo and Airman Ashley Dimaculangan were available for blood donation.

The three PAF personnel proceeded to the BGHMC for blood extraction and were able to donate more than 1,000 cc for two cancer patients.

Thanks to former PAF-TOG1 commanding officer, Lt/Col. Onorlie Brillantes for responding after reading the appeal of two cancer patients, Zhian Rey Campos and Rosselle Cruz through a Facebook post by one of the editorial staff member of the Baguio Midland Courier.

Baguio Midland Courier Publisher Gloria Antoinette Hamada together with some officers of the BGH Advisory Board were on a gift giving mission at BGHMC when watchers of Campos and Cruz appealed for possible blood donors.

Upon reading the appeal, Brillantes, husband of Dr. Celia Flor of the City Health Services Office, coordinated with PAF-TOG1 commander, Lt/Col. Ronnie C. Cabingas to advise his men about the plights of the two cancer patients.

“Since we are qualified to donate, which we have been doing in the past, we volunteered to proceed to the hospital for blood extraction. Magandang halimbawa na tumulong sa kapwa kahit hindi sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay ng pera” the PAF officer said.

Another citizen responded to the call by offering one bag of blood, which was supposed to be used by a cousin but who also passed away due to the big C recently.

Patients battling the big C need blood and platelets for various medical reasons, as blood products cannot be made in a laboratory like medicines. For instance, when cancer or its treatment causes low red blood cells, called anemia, whole blood transfusions are used to replace the RBCs. Whole blood transfusions can be used to replace blood lost during surgeries, too.

People with cancer may also develop low platelets thrombocytopenia when the body’s bone marrow is damaged from some kinds of chemotherapy or from some types of leukemia or lymphoma.
