Girl survives murder; 2 female suspects fall
by Ofelia C. Empian

It was like revisiting the much-publicized Myrna Diones case in the early ‘90s.

A 16-year-old girl, who was struck with a stone to the head and left for dead and thrown into a ravine in Sablan, Benguet on Sept. 9, has survived to tell her ordeals.

The Benguet Police Provincial Police Office under S/Supt. Lyndon Mencio reported that the 16-year-old victim, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, has also positively identified the two female suspects who police reported are suspects for attempted murder.

Mencio said that suspects Thalia Sobejana, 18, of San Fernando City and Diane Saquing, 20, of San Juan, both in La Union were positively identified by the victim are currently in a prison facility.

Benguet police in cooperation with the La Union Police Provincial Office are also looking for the two males who aided the two suspects in leaving for dead the victim at Sitio Pitpitan, Barangay Bayabas, Sablan.

Police earlier reported that a concerned citizen has sought for police assistance after the victim approached him early morning of Sept. 9 for help. The victim said she was thrown below a riprap of about 10 meters deep, where she crawled her way out and sought for help.

Based on initial investigation, the victim, a resident of Sevilla, San Fernando City was partying with her friends in one of the bars in La Union on the night of Sept. 8 when one of the suspects invited her to join them in their table.

She was asked to go with the suspects for a joyride to which she agreed. Along the way, the suspects confronted her of a certain video, which the victim denied any knowledge of. The confrontation continued until the suspects started pulling her hair, choked her, and continued inflicting injuries on her until they reached Sablan.

One of the suspects struck her head with a stone. She pretended to be dead. The two male accomplices of the suspects carried the victim and threw her in the ravine.

When she regained consciousness, the victim managed to find her way up the ravine and sought for help.

The incident has brought back the memory of the Myrna Diones case in 1992. Diones was 14 years old when she survived the massacre of her sister and their two cousins. She was stabbed and thrown to die in a cliff in Sablan but she survived.
