Benguet Arabica set for Boston coffee exposition
by Ofelia C. Empian

Two Benguet coffee producers will be featured in the upcoming Specialty Coffee Expo in Boston, Massachussetts, U.S.A. together with 10 other coffee producers from the Philippines.

The PhilCana Export based at Camp 7, Baguio City and the Benguet State University Coffee from Puguis, La Trinidad, Benguet will be exhibited during the international activity from April 13 to 15.

The local coffee producers were chosen as part of the top 12 best coffees around the country that made it during the recent Philippine Coffee Quality Competition in Manila. The two were the only coffee producers from Luzon that made it to the top 12.

PhilCana Export was in top 11 during the competition which garnered a Q grading score of 83.68 with its coffee having Arabica with typica and bourbon varietals.

It was followed by BSU coffee at number 12 garnering a score of 83.46 having submitted a granica varietal of Arabica.

Charlie Alos, operations manager of PhilCana coffee, said that during last year’s competition, Benguet Arabica coffee producers dominated the grading competition with Atok topping the event.

But due to the effect of Typhoons Ompong and Rosita, most of the coffee producers in Benguet and most parts of Luzon were not able to make it to the top spot as those that made it on top 10 are coffee producers from Mindanao.

“Most of the good cherries were destroyed during the past typhoons. Hopefully next season we could again step up,” Alos said.

The PhilCana coffee made it to the third and seventh spot in last year’s competition held in Baguio City while BSU coffee led by Professor Valentino Macanes was number six last year.

Alos said the U.S.-based organization ACDI/VOCA would bring the top 12 winning coffees to the Boston Specialty Coffee Expo where potential buyers and other coffee enthusiasts would be able to have a taste of the best Philippine coffee.

Further, the top 12 coffees will be part of an international auction open to the U.S.A., United Kingdom and Philippines on April 30.

The 2019 Philippine Coffee Quality Competition top winner for the Robusta category is from Bukidnon-Bayanihan Millennium Multipurpose Cooperative while Balutakay Coffee Farmers’ Association from Davao del Sur topped the Arabica category during the awarding rites held on March 23 at the De La Salle University, Manila.
