City Vet, BPI back urban gardening
by Gaby B. Keith / PIO

The City Veterinary Office (CVO) and the Bureau of Plant Industry conducted 10 trainings on urban gardening, established 11 gulayan sa paaralan/barangay projects including three demonstration gardens, and distributed 770 coffee seedlings in the past six months.

CVO Head Brigit Piok said 17 information, education, and communication campaigns including the distribution of reading materials on urban gardening were also done in the various barangays during the same period.

She said that the upcoming community-based trainings will include urban gardening, trichoderma propagation for composting and fertilizer, fruit wine making, coffee rejuvenation, mushroom production, aquaponics, and strawberry, broccoli, cut-flower and high-value crops production.

Piok said the CVO and BPI is also collecting samples of fruits and vegetables at the public market for pesticide analysis.

She said that there were traces of pesticide from 67 samples they collected but stressed that these were all below the minimum limits, although it can still create some health issues over time.

“This is why our offices’ mandate is to promote, encourage, train, and assist our constituents to produce their own vegetables, fruits, and coffee. We can plant this in sacks, cans, and plastic bottles. We can also convert our biodegradable wastes into fertilizers to be used in growing organic fruits and vegetables,” Piok said.
