by Carlito C. Dar / PIA

LA TRINIDAD Benguet – The Department of Science and Technology, in partnership with the provincial government of Mountain Province, is all set for the 2019 Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) scheduled here from Nov. 19 to 22.

With the theme “Science for the people: Enabling technologies for sustainable development,” RSTW 2019 will showcase the latest innovations in technologies, products and research that can help achieve the country’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

DOST Cordillera Director Nancy Bantog said the RSTW will include science, technology and innovation fora with the following topics: Partnership for the Goals – Cracking the Code for SDG 17; Industry, Innovation, Infrastructure – Protecting Technological Innovation (SDG 9); Decent Work and Economic Growth – Ensuring Business Continuity and Supporting Entrepreneurs with RDI Technologies (SDG 8), and Sustainable Cities and Communities – Managing Wastes with RDI Technologies (SDG 11).

DOST Sec. Fortunato dela Peña is expected to grace the opening program where two innovation projects will be launched.

The Regional Research, Development and Innovation Management Information System will be the first database for research and development, inventions, innovations and S&T facilities developed or established in the region.

The other project, “Design and piloting of a very high frequency provincial radio communication network for early warning, incident and hazard monitoring in Mountain Province,” aims to address the usual connectivity problem on mountainous areas. It concerns connecting the towns of Paracelis and Bauko to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Command Center in Bontoc, Bantog said.

Along with the DOST-attached agencies and partner government offices and educational institutions, the RSTW will also showcase its regular activities such as S&T exhibits; technology bazaar; Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program Summit; DOST-SEI workshop for students; S&T quiz for elementary and secondary schools in the Cordillera; disaster summit for kids; and an S&T journalism workshop for high school and college students.
