NMIS conducts food safety training, IEC for LGU trainers
by Carlito C. Dar / PIA

In its goal to ensure food safety standards in the Cordillera, the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) hosted a two-day trainer’s training seminar on awareness campaign on food safety.

Attended by 30 food safety trainers from the provincial and selected city and municipal veterinary offices in the region, the activity held in Baguio on Oct. 28 and 29 was generally aimed to capacitate food safety advocacy focal persons as resource speakers so they can help reduce the burden of food-borne illness incidence brought by unsafe food preparation and handling.

Training sessions included  lectures on communication and presentation skills, presentation of food safety modules for food handlers and consumers, proper food handling, tips on ensuring safer food, food hazards, cleaning and sanitation, food preservation and storage, and pest control.

The participants were also engaged in group workshops and micro-teaching.

NMIS Regional Technical Director Lilia Juliana Fermin outlined the importance of the activity in strengthening the capacity of local government units to conduct their own food/meat safety seminars and trainings for local meat processors and consumers down to the household level in their respective areas of responsibility.

She said partnership with LGUs is important not only in ensuring that clean and certified meat products are sold in local communities but also in strengthening meat processors, handlers, vendors and consumers’ awareness on food safety and hazards,  such as the African Swine Fever which recently entered the country.
