Abra on alert vs African Swine Dever, conducts checkpoints
by PNA release

Policemen in Abra who are assigned in towns that serve as entry and exit points in the province have heightened the inspection of vehicles as part of the implementation of the order banning entry of live pigs and pork meat products to prevent the spread of the African swine fever (ASF).

The checkpoints are done with the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO).

“We are strictly implementing because the governor issued an executive order prohibiting the entry of pork and live pigs in Abra,” said Col. Alfredo Dangani, Abra Provincial Police Office director.

One of the checkpoint areas is Tangadan, San Quintin, which connects to Narvacan, Ilocos Sur.

Other entry points to Abra are the Abra-Kalinga road via Malibcong and the Nueva Era-Abra road via Danglas.

Since the implementation of the executive order, 390 kilos of meat, including pork liver, have been seized at the quarantine checkpoints for lack of permit and certification. The confiscated products were burned and buried.

Gov. Jocelyn Bernos issued Executive Order 15-2019 on Oct. 3 declaring a total ban on the transport into the province of live swine, raw meat, frozen, or processed pork.

Abra is known for its bagnet and longanisa products aside from the chicharon used for the popular pancit Abra.

The order directed the PVO, municipal agriculture offices, Philippine National Police, the Department of Trade and Industry, and other concerned agencies to coordinate and strictly enforce the quarantine control protocols and food safety measures in Abra.

It also directed the PVO to deploy personnel at the Tangadan checkpoint and other entry points to conduct quarantine and inspection procedures on all shipments of live animals and animal products.

Bernos called for a meeting with hog raisers, meat vendors, livestock coordinators, and municipal agriculture officers of the 27 towns of Abra and asked them to relay the ban to the public to help prevent the entry of the ASF to the province.

“The cooperation of everybody is needed to make sure that Abra will maintain its status as ASF-free province,” she said.

In Sagada, Mountain Province, Mayor James Pooten issued on Oct. 23 EO 56-2019 banning the entry of live pigs, fresh pork, and pork products without accompanying veterinary health clearances, National Meat Inspection Services permits and proper shipping permits to the municipality.

The order reinforces the municipal council resolution that called and alerted the public to avoid the purchase of fresh pork, frozen foods made of pork and other related pork products coming outside the municipality due to the continuing alert on ASF affecting some areas in Luzon.

The order was issued to prevent the virus from entering Sagada, which is known for its etag (smoked meat).

Benguet has also issued a total ban on pigs and pork-meat products as a protection to the livelihood of several residents in the province.
