School On Air aids 65 Ifugao corn farmers
by PIA–Ifugao

ALFONSO LISTA, Ifugao – More than 60 corn farmers here gained knowledge that can boost their yields through the School on the Air (SOA) program on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) on corn.

A total of 65 enrollees received their certificates after successfully completing the four months SOA over DWAL FM radio station on Mondays from August to November 2017 tackling the modular course on GAP. This was conducted by the Agricultural Training Institute-Cordillera through the Municipal Agricultural Office.

The corn farmers thanked the organizers of the SOA for their added knowledge. “Agyaman kami iti programa iti ATI ta adu ti naadal mi maipapan iti natalged ken napinpintas nga wagas ti panagmula ken panangtaripato iti mula nga mais,” the farmers said.

The SOA is a strategy of disseminating information using the radio. It may follow a certain program or curriculum in delivering certain topics. It is among the various training and extension approaches and modalities employed by ATI-CAR that can reach relatively more number of participants with less hassle on the part of participants.

The SOA is also a strategy adopted by other agencies such as the National Nutrition Council’s Nutrition School on the Air, a nutrition promotion module developed by the NNC to create public awareness and adopt good nutrition practices, in recognition of radio as the widest and most accessed medium by the public especially in rural areas.

Its elements are series of lessons aired in a radio program, daily lessons that last from 15 to 30 minutes, listeners are enrolled, and quizzes are given after every lesson. A certificate is given to the enrollees after completion of the course.
