NPA rebel surrenders in Kalinga
by Ofelia C. Empian

A member of the New Peoples Army surrendered to government troops in Barangay Pantikian, Balbalan, Kalinga recently.

The 53-year-old rebel identified as Joseph Masadao, according to the police report, has been suffering from an injury incurred while in the tunnel of Gaang Gold Mining, when he turned himself in.

Barangay officials of Pantikian coordinated with the police for the surrender of Masadao who was received by the joint personnel of Balbalan Municipal Police Station, Regional Public Safety Battalion, the Police Regional Office-Cordillera and members of the 50th Infantry Batallion in the afternoon of Sept. 24.

Masadao is a member of the Militia ng Bayan under the command of Marcial Dagay operating in Kalinga and nearby provinces.

Also known as “Ronald,” he was brought to the Western Kalinga District Hospital for treatment and later referred to Kalinga Provincial Hospital, Tabuk City for further medical attention.

C/Supt Elmo Francis Sarona, Cordillera police director, said Masadao is now under the protection of the operating troops for his security and fast facilitation of benefits and financial assistance in order for him to start a new and peaceful life.

“He is just one among other rebels who opted to withdraw their armed struggle for them to be with their families and to seek for a reformed life in the community,” Sarona said.

“The continuous surrender of members of the NPA only manifests that the intensified programs of the government troops to counter insurgency in the region is effective thus rebels are starting to surrender and return back to the folds of the law,” Sarona said.
