Silahis ng Pasko activities slated

On its 36th year of caring and sharing, Silahis ng Pasko, the longest running Christmas Season offering in Baguio and the Cordilleras will kick off on Dec. 1.

A children-parents Christmas mardi gras will open the activity at the Office of the City Social Welfare and Development (OCSWD) followed by the opening program at the Melvin Jones grandstand.

In the afternoon of the same day, the presentation and potongan rites or the mister and miss little Silahis ng Pasko sa Baguio 2009 awarding ceremony at the Malcolm Square.

Dec. 6 is the PMA cadets day at the park where a silent drill exhibition by the Philippine Military Academy Cadet Corps will be presented at Melvin Jones. This will be followed by a concert of the PMA band.

The Baguio Lucky Christmas Family ’09 will be chosen from Dec. 6 to 8. The winning family will come from the poorest of the poor who will be given a red carpet reception, accommodation, sightseeing tours, and other surprises.

The dancing and singing charistmas tree by the Baguio City National High School is scheduled on Dec.12 while a special Olympics in honor of Eunice Kennedy, the founder of the International Special Olympic Games will also be held at Malcolm Square.

The special day for the special people will be hosted by the Texas Instrument Philippines. A wheelathon for the paraplegics and walkathon for the blind and a chess tournament for the special athletes will all start at 7 a.m. at the Malcolm Square.

Helping hands for the Baguio children’s Christmas fun alley and raffle for 100 newspaper boys, shoeshine boys, baggage boys, and bag sellers, who were pre-selected by the OCSWD, is set on Dec. 19.

Pasko sa McDo is a treat and talent show for 100 children at the OCSWD on Dec. 21 while the nightly special Christmas treat for children or the Gabi at Jollibee will happen from Dec. 16 to 24 for the less fortunate children in the barangays.

The lucky balikbayan will be chosen on Dec. 27. There will be three categories namely the lucky balikbayan individual, couple, and family and the Balik ng Balik Balikbayan. This event will include the Cordillra international athletes and sportsmen get together.

On its 19th year, the Lucky Christmas Baby search will be held on Dec. 25 while the Lucky New Year Baby will be chosen on Jan. 1, 2010.

The Silahis ng Pasko activities will culminate with the 23rd Annual Kafagway Sports Award Program at the Malcolm Square on Jan. 16, 2010.
