Mountain Collegian wins nat’l award
by Romulo A. Bagacina Jr.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) declared Benguet State University’s student publication as the Luzon winner in its culture page writing competition.

BSU’s The Mountain Collegian bested the 25 colleges and universities that joined the contest in which the top spot for Luzon is shared by MC, and the Michaelean Herald of St. Michael’s College in Biñan, Laguna. The Quill of the Southwestern University of Cebu bagged the winning spot for Visayas while The Crusader of Xavier University Cagayan de Oro was chosen as the Mindanao winner. For the National Capital Region, the winners were the Papyrus of Adamson University, Ignite of the JCSGO Christian Academy in Cubao and the Lunduyan ng Kultura at Sining-TIP Voice of the Technological Institute of the Philippines, Manila.

MC adviser Grace Bengwayan said the competition was an avenue for the publication to promote Cordilleran culture, and indigenous know-ledge and practices. She likewise said that the competition would also measure the writing skills of the participating publications.

The competition was held early this year as part of the celebration of the National Arts Month-Philippine International Arts Festival 2010. The awarding ceremony will be held on June 13 at the Sining Gising show at NBN-4.
