Asipulo is 2014 Gotad champion
by Marcelo B. Lihgawon / PIA

LAGAWE, Ifugao – Asipulo was declared the grand champion in the 2014 Gotad ad Ifugao.

Asipulo garnered 56.25 points to bag the overall champion while Lagawe and Hungduan placed second and third, respectively.

The total points were earned from the 28 contested cultural events including the profits from the agro-industrial trade fair. Asipulo excelled in the float and street dancing contest and other cultural sports that highlighted the provincial festivity from June 14 to 20.

Asipulo will receive P1 million worth of infrastructure projects. Lagawe will receive P800,000 and Hungduan will get P600,000. Consolation prizes of P400,000 will also be given to the different  municipalities based on the number of events they participated in.

Peterson Beleran of Lagawe and April Joy Bugtong of Tinoc were crowned as Wigan ya Bugan di Gotad or Mr. and Miss Gotad ad Ifugao.

Hungduan won in the musical theater arts competition held on June 16 as one of the highlights of the province’s founding anniversary.

The competition revolved around the theme, “Gotad, a celebration of cultural heritage as foundation of self-determination and sustainable development.”

The theater performers of Hung-duan called Teatro Kabbakab portrayed the play Nan Boltan,  which means inheritance in the Ifugao Twali dialect. The group bested other competitors from Lagawe, Lamut, Kiangan, Asipulo, Tinoc, Hingyon, Banaue, and Aguinaldo.

The play focused on the value of the muyong system as a way of life and culture among the Ifugaos. Muyong is a forest privately owned by families or clans and traditionally managed, maintained, and sustained through generations and is now recognized by the government as sustainable indigenous forest management system.
