Abra town celebrates Sakuting Festival
by PIA Abra

DOLORES, Abra – People in this municipality celebrated its homegrown Sakuting Festival last May 5 to 7 with no less than the President commending them for such a “noble tribute to culture.”

“I would like to greet the people of Dolores in the province of Abra as you celebrate the 7th Sakuting Summer Festival. I would like to commend your municipal officials for giving homage to one of our Philippine folk dances. This is a very noble tribute to our culture. Congratulations to everyone,” said President Rodrigo R. Duterte in a video message to all Dolorians in the celebration of the annual festival.

The Sakuting Festival was first celebrated in 2011 pioneered by Mayor Robert Victor G. Seares Jr.

It is a dance similar to arnis where dancers play two opposing sides with the use of sticks as a weapon. This dance and music passed down to the Dolorians portray the battles between the Ilocano Christians from the lowlands and the mountain native Tingguians in the countless resistance of the latter over Spanish influence of culture and religion.

The dance immortalizes the spirit of an Abrenian warrior manifested in every clash and footwork, said Seares.

This year’s festival kicked off with the Dance Pasiklaban joined by the locals, Mayor’s Cup Championship, and Ms. Sakuting 2017 coronation night on May 5.

Other activities included Extreme 4X4 Offroad Challenge, Karambola, and Color Fun Run. Filipino rapper Gloc 9 was also invited for a concert last May 6.

Sakuting concluded with a farmers’ day, street dancing Showdown, and Gabi ng Barangal barangay night on May 7.
