UB celebrates tourism week
by Press release

The University of Baguio’s School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management (SIHTM) hosted the annual Tourism Week celebration with the global theme: “Sustainable tourism: A tool for development” last Sept. 19 to 21.

The celebration included series of competitions that were held separately but simultaneously on the different venues within the university.

The event featured 12 individual competitions namely tourism quiz bee, flight attendant showmanship, open photography, international tour package, tourism poster and slogan making, international virtual tour guiding, destination ad campaign, feature article writing, international and Philippine tribal costume presentation, tourism development plan presentation, Photoshop cover page, international cultural dance presentation and four student organization competitions including hotel product presentation, tourism sing and dance, event proposal and virtual tour guiding competition.

Apart from the different competitions which were held to hone and upgrade the student’s mastery of their skills through co-curricular activities, the highlight of the event was the formal launching of the newest green initiative of SIHTM particularly the tourism program – the Green S.W.I.T.C.H (Sustainable Way of Innovating and Transforming for a Happy Community) which emphasizes that sustainability doesn’t need to be expensive and that everyone, in their simple ways, could contribute to green change.

The program was presented by Jenelyn Magpatoc, program chair of BSTM, during the culminating activity of Tourism Week. The culminating activity was graced by Department of Tourism, chief of the Tourism Operations Office Jovita Ganongan, a representative from Department of Environment and Natural Resources-CAR, UB President Dhanna Kerina Rodas, UB Vice President for Finance Herminio Bautista, Dean Melanie Saro, other VIPs, faculty members, staff and students. It included a symbolic signing of the participants’ support to Green Switch. The program was pre-launched during the SIHTM Day and Night wherein the students, faculty and staff showed their commitment to sustainability by bringing their own tumblers and lunch boxes. The program is in line with the fifth institutional objective of UB which is to produce a graduate who advocates sustainable programs for the community and the environment.

The culminating activity also included the parade of nations by SIHTM faculty members and staff and ended with the most awaited awarding ceremony.

Young Innovative Chefs is the overall champion in the student organization competition. The Young Innovative Professionals and Honor Society ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively. All the winners in the 16 events received a certificate of recognition and a gold medal for those who were hailed as champion.
