by Press release

STORY WEAVER -- Ibaloy doctor cum writer Dr. Ryan Guinaran (2nd from left) stands tall as one of the three national finalists in the 11th Jaime Cardinal Sin Catholic Book Awards under the category book for youth with his book, “To My Fellow Igorot Youth: Poems, Stories and Essays.” -- Paul Nuval

Cordilleran author Dr. Ryan C. Guinaran bagged anew the best book for the youth in the 11th Cardinal Sin Catholic Book Awards (CSCBA) held on Sept. 13 in Pasay City.

Guinaran’s book, “To My Fellow Igorot Youth: Poems, Stories and Essays” bested two other finalists in the youth category. Included in the category are books that give values formation to young individuals ages 13 and above including stories of faith, virtues, morals, heroic deeds, and special youth documented activities.

Another book from the Cordillera, “From Elders to Children (Stories of Wisdom from the Cordillera, Philippines) written by Judy Cariño-Fang-loy, Merci Dulawan, Vicky Macay, Maria Elena Regpala, and Lucia Ruiz, was a finalist in the book for Children category.

The book “To My Fellow Igorot Youth” was published last year by Diteng Inc. It is comprised of poems, stories, parables, and sketches of the author. The themes covered Cordillera and Igorot issues, culture, education, health, youth mobilization and literature. The award citation also noted the classy book design, lay-out and illustrations done by Paul Joseph Nuval, Apolinario Bagano Jr., Dani Tindungan, and Ferdinand Palbusa as reflecting the Igorot’s rich culture.

In 2010, Guinaran was also awarded with a CSCBA trophy for the Youth and Children Category for his first book “AnecDoc’s: Brown Sauce for Health Students.”

The Asian Catholic Communicators Inc. through the CSCBA annually recognizes the best books written and published in the country that promotes total human development, Gospel values, and Filipino culture. It honors nine winners in as many categories. The program is under the auspices of the Catholic Mass Media Awards.
