Leg brace is more appropriate for Hannah
MA. ISABEL A. BUANZI, RSW, Social Worker, Baguio City

The Stimulation and Therapeutic Activity Center of Baguio, Inc. (STAC 5) is  a non-profit institution that provides free rehabilitation and related social services to children and young adults with disabilities (CWYD). It also serves as a socialization and an informal training center for children and young adults with disabilities. Services being provided are physical and occupational therapy treatment, SPED sessions, supplemental feeding, socialization activities, and referral for other medical and social services. More so, STAC 5 also assists parents in preparing their children for their future integration to school, either regular or SPED school.

I read the story of Mr. Ramon Dacawi published on Sept. 4 issue of the Baguio Midland Courier stating that Hannah Cyrele Martin needs wheelchair for her mobility. I just want to correct some things. Hannah Cyrele is a long time beneficiary of the abovementioned center.

Last June 2011 (not last year as was stated), Hannah’s grandmother Rita requested the office for a case study of the child as a requirement in seeking financial assistance for the child. Basing on the observation of the center’s physical therapist and from the other staff members, Hannah is not recommended for a wheelchair, which her grandmother wants, because she cannot yet sit properly, she just slides when seated.

Likewise, this is to avoid dependency on the device. Instead, she was recommended for a leg brace so that her balance and tolerance as to her standing will increase in preparation for her walking. A wheelchair is not advisable at this time because she’s still too young to be confined on the said device. To those kind-hearted people who still want to help, a leg brace is very much recommended for her. Thank you and more power!
