Why people engage in politics
PERCIVAL B. ALIPIT, Baguio City

I had a random survey in the locality asking political candidates why they vie for public leadership, and the result showed that most do so to get money, followed by to gain prestige, then to serve the community, and just for fun.

This is revealing since politics in our country is expensive. It is a financial burden. A candidate needs to spend a lot and once elected, the politician has to recover huge expenditures incurred during the campaign and has to be generous to perpetuate power.

How much is spent during the campaign should not be a basis in the selection of aspirants. Candidates who have modest lifestyle, who exemplify high degree of integrity and competence, and who uphold desirable ethical values deserve to be put in public office.
