| Ifugaos believe in governor’s integrity |
| by Candice Magno Guyguyon, Ifugao |
|
I have been an avid reader of the Philippine Daily Inquirer for many years now, believing that it delivers the most credible and unbiased news reports in the country. However, I was disappointed with the news entitled “Bolante’s list: Who’s who got how much” published last Nov. 13, where it was stated, “The following officials received the P728 million from the Ginintuang Masaganang Ani program of the government, as shown by a 2004 document from the Department of Budget and Management, a copy of which was given to reporters by Anakpawis Rep. Rafael Mariano.”
The words: “The following officials received the P728 million” are so biased and misleading as it was made to appear that the said officials personally received and pocketed the money from the fertilizer fund instead of it being channeled to their respective local government units. Had the PDI exercised its usual practice of unbiased journalism, they should have worded the statements differently like: “The following provinces under the administration of the following governors were recipients of the P728 million from the Ginintuang Masaganang Ani.” Ordinary readers like me would readily understand what you have written to mean the officials mentioned are already guilty of graft and corruption without the benefit of the doubt or without giving them a chance to explain their side in the proper forum. I hope that the Senate investigation on Joc-joc Bolante will push through without any outside pressure for the Filipino people deserve to know the truth. However, it is truly unfair for the honest ones who have worked so hard to earn the respect of their constituents. I am speaking especially on behalf of Ifugao governor Teodoro Baguilat Jr. I know him as an honest and dedicated public servant.
Gov. Baguilat has dedicated his life to the service of his constituents. I am confident that the majority of the Ifugaos will fervently believe in his integrity. So to the PDI family, please be more discerning next time. |

Now that Baguio City has fallen behind – ranked 18th among 25 medium-sized cities in the Philippines, in particular, (Baguio ranks 18th in AIM’s study of 25 RP medium cities, Baguio Midland Courier, Sept. 28) it is necessary to have a real alternative so that the negative repercussion can be mitigated at the soonest possible time. |

The provision or delivery of basic services to the people is a fundamental responsibility of the government. This holds true in our beloved city. Thus, the LGUs play a major role in ensuring that fundamental needs of the citizenry are addressed at all times. |
