Groundwork for SOA on corn production in MP, Kalinga starts
by DA release

PARACELIS, Mountain Province – Department of Agriculture Corn Program Coordinator Gerardo Banawa and Regional Information Officer Robert Domoguen made a series of consultations with key stakeholders in Kalinga and this province for the launching of another School on the Air (SOA) on corn for the first quarter of 2018.

The consultations were conducted with the office of the Vice Mayor of Paracelis, Municipal Agriculturist Eusebia Balocnit, Lorenzo D. Carpio, Provincial Agriculturist of Kalinga, Domingo Bakilan, and Kalinga Provincial Corn Coordinator Remy Balliyao.

After four months of airing SOA in Kalinga, which concluded with 320 farmer graduates on corn on Dec. 18, SOA will soon be aired for farmers in Tanudan, Kalinga and Paracelis, Mountain Province.

Proposed as part of the SOA for 2018 aside from airing the learning modules are the implementation of a model farm and learning site on Sustainable Corn Production in Sloping Areas (SCOPSA), the use of tricantera as hedgerows, good agricultural practices on corn, and the nine steps on corn production.

“SCOPSA will definitely help the farmers of Paracelis and Tanudan especially in mitigating concerns on soil erosion and climate change,” Banawa said.

Banawa added that the early coordination and positive acceptance of the local government units toward this project is crucial in inviting more farmer students and participants to SOA.

Balliyao is seen to once again go on Radyo ng Bayan to educate this time, the farmers of Tanudan and Paracelis on corn production.
