On September 30, 2009 we launched the relief drive for Ondoy victims in Metro Manila and its nearby areas in the Baguio Midland Courier website. This was followed by the announcement in the newsprint edition of the Courier on October 4, 2009. In a few days we were heartened by the outpouring of help from the locality and from friends overseas. Little did we know that we were just preparing for a harder storm to hit Baguio and the Cordillera Region. When Pepeng twice-hit our region that first week of October we decided to channel the relief and donations already collected to those closer to home. Although the Baguio Midland Courier has been known to raise funds and conduct relief efforts in the past, our young and able bodied staff members are neophytes in conducting relief operations from identifying which sites to help, how to get there, and what possible items to bring. We tried to look for areas not so saturated by help, by tapping grassroots leaders, community workers, relatives, and friends. We spent most of the relief operation trips aboard an open truck until we were able to tap the services of the Benguet Electric Cooperative. Many of the areas we wanted to help were still isolated by the time we went there, some places were too far-flung that typhoon or not, accessibility will still be a problem. Despite all these we are grateful to have found so many people who helped us deliver all the donations you have continuously entrusted to our office until we finally winded down the collections on November 8, 2009.
