JVOFI turns over repaired water system in Banangan
by Redjie M. Cawis

SABLAN, Benguet – The Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation Inc. (JVOFI) inaugurated  and turned-over a rehabilitated water system to the local government and the community water users association of Barangay Banangan last Tuesday.

JVOFI president Reynaldo Bautista Sr. led the turnover and inauguration together with Gov. Nestor Fongwan, Mayor Arthur Baldo, other local government officials, and representatives of the departments of the Interior and Local Government and Environment and Natural Resources.

The water system  will provide potable water for 275 households in the barangay as well as the nearby schools.

The project was funded by the European Union under the “Saving the Benguet watershed for water” program. Bautista said this is the first of six water works projects to be given to other municipalities of Benguet, particularly those lacking supply and sources of water.

The other areas to be given the same project  are  Ambassador, Tublay; Poblacion, Bokod; Poblacion, Atok; Sagpat, Kibungan, and Loo, Buguias.

Bautista said the main objective of the project  is to increase  people’s awareness especially at the community level, of the importance of the watershed to their lives. This highlights the fusion of forest or watershed protection and sustainability of water sources.

It also aims to increase participation of local government units, communities and other stakeholders in the devolved functions of forest and watershed and water management through empowered and strengthened partnerships.

Fongwan asked residents to help protect and maintain communal forests to ensure steady water supply to their community and their households. He encouraged local leaders to lead the community in protecting the remaining forests and trees.

The JVOFI also donated firefighting equipment to the barangay fire brigade.
