DepEd to assess Palaro hosting
by Jimmy K. Laking

The Department of Education has revealed its Palarong Pambansa board will convene in August to evaluate bids by interested local government units to host the 2016 games, including a bid submitted by the province of Benguet.

In a letter to Gov. Nestor Fongwan, Asec. Tonisito M.C. Umali revealed letters of intent to host next year’s games should be submitted on or before June 16.

“The bids will then be evaluated based on existing sports and billeting facilities,” added Umali.

Umali said criteria in selecting the eventual host includes accessibility of sports facilities, provision for billeting areas, capability of sports facilities to provide basic services and peace and order situation.

Benguet has expected to complete the construction of a multi-million multipurpose gymnasium as the centerpiece of its facilities.

The gym’s bleachers are capable of seating a maximum of 8,000 people.

The gym’s basketball court flooring is covered with maple hardwood similar to those used in PBA games. It has a layer of bleachers and its second floor above the main stage has spaces for VIP offices, a coffee shop, and rooms for table games. Nine roll-up doors will enable persons with disability to watch the games.

The gym’s facilities were all done in accordance with standards set by the International Association and Athletic Federation.

The sports center’s oval will include a rubberized 400-meter track and an area for track and field, football, and other events that are expected to be completed by next year.

The provincial government has ruled out building a swimming pool in the area, citing prohibitive costs in purchasing heaters as well as in maintenance.

Instead, the province has been on the look-out to purchase a lot in the municipalities where hot springs are located, and where hot water can be sourced to maintain the temperature required in swimming competitions.
