Gabutan to face new fighter as Igorot boxers ready to rumble
Harley Palangchao

World Boxing Organization Oriental Bantamweight champion Dayer Gabutan and Asian Boxing Council minimum weight champion Mathew Handig are ready to face their foes in the first-ever International Boxing Federation world title elimination in Northern Luzon.

Dubbed “Twin Rumble,” the biggest boxing fight to be held in the municipal gym of La Trinidad, is expected to bring back the popularity of the sports in the region, which is jointly supported by the municipal government and Benguet Rep. Ronald Cosalan.

Gabutan, the pride of Besao, Mountain Province, will no longer face bantamweight champion Caem Rasmanudin due to some unresolved issues.

The Igorot boxer, who holds a record of 18 wins with one loss and two no contest, will instead square off with Indonesian Lande Olin who is an older fighter with 11 wins with seven knockouts.

Handig, a native of Catarman, Northern Samar but now based in La Trinidad, will be facing former minimum weight world champion Katsunari Takayama of Japan.

“Both fighters completed 100 rounds of sparring sessions and they are ready to excite boxing fans next week,” said boxing promoter Brico Santig.

Santig said the event could not have been possible without the generosity of other supporters like Smart, MJ Gacad, Puregold, Beneco, Pagcor, San Miguel Brewery, Lepanto Mines, Mayor Mauricio Domogan, and the city government of Baguio, the provincial government of Mountain Province, DPWH, and volunteers.

Alvin Rey Tam of Kapangan, son of legendary fighter Rey, is also part of the four stacked supporting event and will be facing Jestoni Pepito of Cebu.

Tam will gun for his 12th win, which includes three losses, while Pepito will seek for his first win after racking up nine successive losses in his last 10 fights.

Former WBC youth champion Nathan Bolcio also returns to the ring eyeing for an 11th win after losing two consecutive fights of his four losses. This time, he will square off with Mandaluyong’s Aramdo Casa with a record of 11 wins and nine loses.

Stephen Gelawa will be boxing off against Arnel Taganas, while Rex Wa-o takes on Danilo Gabisan as openers.

All the fighters in the supporting events are Igorot boxers.
