Itogon braces for series of run events next year
by Ofelia C. Empian

Various running events are set in 2018 in Itogon, Benguet, as it is fast becoming one of the top trail destinations for ultra running activities north of Manila.

Itogon will be busy with its list of trail running events in close coordination with organizers and the local government unit.

First in the list is the King of the Mountain Ultra, which will conduct lung-busting series commenced by the Mt. Ugo Marathon scheduled on Jan. 21; the Old Spanish Trail on Feb. 17 and the most grueling Hardcore Hundred Miles or H1 event from May 17 to 19, 2018.

H1 participants have to hurdle trails from Itogon to Bokod, Benguet and Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya to complete the race.

Set from Feb. 3 and 4 is the 7th Pilipinas Akyathlon, which is set to gather around 200 runners, who will scale Mt. Ugo.

Running enthusiasts will choose from five categories: the 46-kilometer sky Marathon, 25-km mountain run, 10-km trail run, the vertical kilometer, and the kiddie akyathlon.

Another running event to look forward to in April is the Mt. Ugo Summer Climb, which is an invitational and promotional tourism activity of the local government of Itogon in partnership with Barangay Tinongdan.

Also, another LGU-organized event is the Mt. Ulap Adventure Trek set on Oct. 30 of 2018.

Itogon’s top drawing destinations are its mountain trails, specifically Mt. Ulap and Mt. Ugo.

Mt. Ulap appeals to tourists because of its accessibility for a day-hike tour while Mt. Ugo is for the sports enthusiasts and adventure seekers because visitors need to camp for two days to traverse it.

Itogon Councilor Norbert Pacio said most of the adventure events have been conducted in the past and the LGU and the organizers have already established a set of rules in conducting various trail runs.

Pacio said the trail follow regulations that are in place by the municipality. He said they make sure that the organizers use various routes so as not to “abuse” the trails.

He said the organizers also developed relationships with the community in the area making the organizing of the events easier and effective.
