Baguio lauds winning athletes in world stage
by Gaby B. Keith / PIO

The city council passed resolutions giving due recognition and appreciation to all the winning athletes and their coaches who brought honor to Baguio.

One batch of athletes commended are Muay Thai athletes who participated in the Jincheon 1st World Youth Martial Arts Masterships held Nov. 3 to 7 in South Korea.

Athletes from 30 countries participated in the event.

The Baguio athletes who bagged gold medals in their respective categories are Islay Erika Bomogao, Liane Benito and Mariah Trenyce Go while those winning bronze are Felix Dave Cantores and Rosemarie Recto.  Their coaches are Bryan Olod and Joseph Oloan.

“The city council has regularly paid tribute to outstanding Baguio athletes for their astonishing feat of bringing pride and glory to the City of Baguio from sport competitions,” the measure states.

It stressed that, “the outstanding performance of Baguio athletes and their coaches deserves to be commended for the honor and recognition they have brought to the city.”

Godwin Amos Langbayan was also commended for winning two gold and one silver medals during the 2017 Asia Pacific Submission Jiu-Jitsu GI and No GI International Open held in Pasay City on Nov. 5.

Langbayan also bagged two golds, one silver and one bronze during the Philippine-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu National Championships and Damau Philippine International Jiu-Jitsu Tournament on Sept. 30 and Oct. 7 to 8.

Langbayan is a resident of Barangay Camp Allen and serviceman of the Philippine Air Force.  He trains with the Air Force, Clube De Jiu Jitsu Filipinas and Team Lakay.

“His achievements has made our city proud and repeatedly shown the spirit of Baguio’s competitiveness and excellence to the entire country.  The outstanding performance by our Baguio athletes that could only be attained through hard work, dedication and technique is worthy of commendation,” the measure states.

First Brave Bantamweight champion Stephen “The Sniper” Loman and his coach also received praises from the city council for their feat during the Brave Combat Federation’s Brave 9:  The Kingdom of Champions held in Bahrain on Nov. 17.

Loman, 22, a member of Team Lakay, is the first Filipino to compete in the prestigious competition. He defeated Gurdarshan “St. Lion” Mangat via technical knockout in the first round of the fight to bring home the title as first Brave Bantamweight champion.

“Stephen ‘The Sniper’ Loman’s showcase of agility, strength, endurance, and discipline is remarkable and proof that Cordillerans, specifically the Baguio people, are competitive and excellent. This outstanding performance deserves commendation for the honor and recognition brought to our city,” the measure states.
