Baguio aquathlon successfully staged
by Ofelia C. Empian

Swimming and running enthusiasts in Baguio and nearby areas converged Dec. 30 for an aquathlon event at the Baguio Athletic pool and oval.

The 2nd Baguio Aquathlon was open to ages six to 60 years old where participants will have a 700-meter swim in the athletic pool and the five-kilometer run for the 15 and above adults. is set along the Kisad-Military Cut Off going towards Loakan and back.

Children 14 years old and below competed in a shorter distance swim and will run in the athletic track oval.

“On its second year we want this event to be a sports tourism event where athletes will get the feel of the cold Baguio weather and enjoy racing at high altitude,” said race organizer and triathlete Jet Ramos.

Ramos said the event would be led by Southeast Asian Games triathlon silver medalist John “Rambo” Chicano together with national team junior elites JC Abad and La Salle bemedalled swimmer Aki Lorbes and the Borlain sisters, Tara and Cheska of Alaska Ironkids.

The visiting athletes went up against local bets from Baguio and Benguet Josh Ramos and Eunice Ulat.

Race gun started at 6 a.m. for the event in cooperation with the Baguio City Sports Office headed by Gaudencio Gonzales and hosted by the Baguio Benguet multi-sport team.

“It is the desire of the Baguio Benguet multisport team to promote multisport in the City, we will identify potential athletes from the kids and will invite them to join the grassroots program of the triathlon development camp,” Ramos said.

The camp is initially set tentatively late January next year or early February said Ramos.

The swim-run event is also backed by Compressport, Unison bike shop, Brooks, TYR, Hoka One one, The Coffee Library, Toyville, FOG Photo and Vizcos Restaurant.
