ONE exceeds UFC rating in TV viewership in Asia
by Harley F. Palangchao

GLOBAL FIGURES -- The presence of national and international media during the Team Lakay Media Day at SM Mall of Asia Arena last week just proved that the Igorot fighters led by ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang have strong base followers in Asia and other parts of the globe. ONE Championship, meanwhile, has exceeded the TV ratings of UFC in Asia.

ONE Champion ship’s staging of Kings of Destiny in Manila that featured the successful title defense by ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang has overtaken the Ultimate Fighting Championship in terms of TV ratings in Asia.

The biggest MMA promotion in Asia reported last week that ONE’s King of Destiny held at the jampacked Mall of Asia Arena on April 21 reached 26 percent peak TV ratings, far higher than the seven percent peak when the UFC lightweight championship bout between Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez in November last year.

Before the ONE’s King of Destiny fight night, which also saw four other Team Lakay fighters winning over their opponents, the Singapore-based promotion announced that its fight nights are being broadcast at one billion homes in 118 countries.

ONE has partnered with the biggest television networks in Asia, including country’s broadcast leader ABS-CBN. This was made possible through the hard work of ONE Chairman Chatri Sityodtong and former ESPN Star Sports senior executive and now ONE Chief Executive Officer Victor Cui.

“I am very happy with the turnout. For perspective, last year, UFC 205 did a roughly six to seven percent ratings share in the Philippines. Numbers don’t lie. We broke all records with a 26 percent peak TV ratings share as per Nielsen. Those numbers are massive. It means one in four Filipinos who were watching TV was watching ONE Championship,” Sit-yodtong said.

Aside from the incredible growth in television viewership, ONE’s presence in social media platforms has been enormous to say the least. From the data released by Neilsen, Facebook and Repucom, ONE has come from 352 million social media impressions to almost four billion, over 11 times than the previous tally.

The enormous growth in television viewership and social media engagements can also be attributed to ONE’s deep respect and development of local and homegrown MMA talents like Folayang, Angela Lee of Singapore, Shinya Aoki of Japan and Myanmar’s Aung La N Sang.

It has also signed contracts with some of the best MMA fighters from across the globe like reigning ONE champions Bibiano Fernandes, Ben Askren, Brandon Vera and Roger Gracie.

ONE’s close ties and connection with its legion of audience sets it apart from other MMA organizations.

“When you talk about martial arts, Asia is the home of martial arts. It has been the home of martial arts for the last 5,000 years. We live, breathe and understand it. We understand the philosophy of it and the spirit of it,” Sityodtong said.
