17–year–old Ifugao boxer is new LuzProBa champ
by Ofelia C. Empian

FUTURE PACMAN -- Ifugao pride 17-year-old Carl Jammes Calingayan Martin is the newest LuzProBa champion after a unanimous decision against a fighter from Manila. With a 4-0 record, Martin has the potential to be a world champion if given support by the government and the private sector. -- Ofelia Empian

A 17 year-old boxer from Ifugao is the newest Luzon Professional Boxing Association bantamweight titleholder in the country.

Carl Jammes Calingayan Martin outboxed the older Jason Buenaobra to win via unanimous decision in their bout on April 19 at the Banaue Gymnasium at Barangay Poblacion, his hometown.

The 22-year-old Buenaobra of Pasay City, has a 4-3-1 win-loss-draw record.

Martin, dubbed “Wonder Boy” is training under the folds of his father and trainer Abel, a retired soldier man who heads the Ifugao Boxing Stable in Lagawe.

The upcoming boxing champ has an impressive four wins with no loss and no draw record after debuting last year in professional boxing.

He was able to secure a spot for the LuzProBa title due to his knockout performances courtesy of his wins against Jayar Omac via corner retirement, Noel Guliman and Manny Mamacquiao both ending in technical knockouts.

The LuzProBa title was previously held by another Ifugao boxer KJ Natuplag, who also started at Martin’s camp before shifting to Highland Boxing Stable in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Martin’s teammates Lambert Bugatti and Ariel Bolante were also successful in their respective bouts in the super flyweight and bantamweight divisions.

Hard-hitting super flyweight Bugatti only needed 64 seconds of the scheduled six-round bout to stop Manila-based Noel Guliman and keep his record perfect in three bouts.

Bolante then knocked out veteran Batangas boxer Reynante Gono in just a minute and a half in their scheduled four-round encounter. It will be Bolante’s second professional victory.

Renato Palay, in other bouts, came out with a victory via decision against Rolin Escauso in their featherweight match while Jerry Canada held a majority draw opposite Nestor Junio.

Abel said his trainees have upcoming bouts in different areas. They have yet to upgrade their training equipment especially with their makeshift boxing ring that was destroyed by the previous typhoons. He is appealing to sports patrons and enthusiasts to assist them in upgrading their training materials.
