Journalists overwhelm fighters in Media Day
by Harley F. Palangchao

Team Lakay fighters led by ONE Championship lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang continue to gain global prominence with throngs of journalists taking part during the “Media Day” held for the all-Igorot warriors.

ONE Championship held the one-day event to allow national and international media outfits more time to interview the nine Team Lakay fighters, who have contracts with the biggest MMA promotions in Asia.

The event was held following the awesome performance of five Team Lakay fighters led by Folayang, who all won in an impressive fashion during the ONE-Kings of Destiny at the Mall of Asia Arena on April 21.

During the media day, Folayang stated: “I am still overwhelmed by the support that the whole Team Lakay is getting from the entire nation. We are all grateful for every cheer, support, and prayer. It keeps us inspired, motivated, and humble. Our goal every fight night is always the same, which is to bring honor to our country.”

Other Lakay fighters who had a day full of fun with journalists were former ONE featherweight world champion and now lightweight fighter Honorio Banario, bantamweight contenders Kevin Belingon and Geje Eustaquio, atomweight contender Joshua Pacio, flyweight contender Danny Kingad, veteran ONE featherweight Edward Kelly and female fighters April Osenio and Gina Iniong.

Also in attendance is famed Team Lakay coach and chairman Mark Sangiao, who is credited for transforming his fighters as champions and world contenders.

Team Lakay, one of the top MMA gyms in Asia, is the only MMA team in the country that has fielded more than 10 fighters in international MMA promotions.

The only Lakay fighter who is no longer active in ONE roster is Rey Docyogen, who became inactive in sports since passing the Architecture board exam several years ago.

It’s only Team Lakay that produced three all-Filipino fighters to the Ultimate Fighting Championship namely Dave Galera, who now owns Gridlock gym, Mark Eddiva and Roldan Sangcha-an. All three fighters are no longer in the active roster of UFC fighters.

Sangiao thanked the media for their continued support to the Philippine MMA and to his famed Team Lakay fighters.

“We are happy to celebrate this feat with our friends in the media and our beloved followers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. We came from the mountains of Baguio City, but we represent the colors of the Philippines on the global stage. Last April, we accomplished a 5-0 sweep, including Eduard’s successful title defense. We came and overcame the challenges. However, the journey doesn’t end there. As martial artists, we are here to grow and learn,” Sangiao said.
